Camping near Dujiangyan and rafting in Hongkou

This is about a hiking and camping trip to a mountain near Dujiangyan, a city about a 65  kms from Chengdu.

6/8 There was about 20 people on this trip.  Most took the fast train from Chengdu to Dujiangyan and a few others like myself brought motorcycles. I wouldn’t have minded taking train and hiking but I had so much gear and food for such a big group.

From Dujiangyan its about a 15 minute cab ride to the base of the mountain on the way to Longchi.  There’s a few ways to go up. You can take the long road, a steeper way or a direct way which is super steep. You can see the camping area from the bottom.   Its actually a paragliding platform with astro turf that is temporarily closed because a couple of people died jumping off a few weeks ago.

Everyone go up to the top in the late afternoon and we set up the tarp and our tents. There was luckily also a couple umbrellas up there which helped out since it eventually rained hard later in the evening and the most of the night pretty hard.   I had brought some Chinese sky lanterns which was nice. It was the Dragon boat festival weekend so it was appropriate for that time. We had a great feast of burgers, sausages, kebabs, potatoes, pasta and salmon.

The next day we walked down to town and had lunch and then half the people went to Dujiangyan to check out the historical area and dam there that’s originally 2000 years old.  The rest of us headed up to Hongkou about 15 kms north of there to go rafting in a tourist area. It was about 200 rmb which is a little high but it was decent fun. They drive you up about ten kms and then you come down pretty quickly in I guess class 2 rapids. After the heavy rain the night before it probably made it even faster.  The bystanders hanging out on the side of the water threw water from buckets or used strong water guns to hit us which was a little annoying.  The water was super cold.  There were some nice views around the area and overall something worth doing once at least.  From there we headed back home.
